About

Our Counselors

Enlightium Academy counselors collaborate with teachers to ensure students are provided the attention they need to succeed in an online learning environment, schedule courses to meet graduation requirements, and provide academic and/or emotional support.

Enlightium counselors are trained to review and evaluate a wide variety of incoming student documentation: report cards, transcripts, entrance assessment scores, and any additional documentation (health records/academic assessment and evaluation documents). At the high school level, the counselor then collaborates with parents to develop an individualized 4-year plan and provide guidance with a career choice, and assist with college admission. For grades PreK-8, the counselor assigns courses based on the student’s grade level and interests.

Families who prefer to speak with a counselor prior to enrolling with Enlightium Academy may schedule a consultation with an Enlightium Academy counselor. Discounts do not apply to counselor consultations.

Additional Counseling Resources

Education, Career, & Life Readiness

Enlightium counselors use a grade-specific comprehensive Education, Career, and Life Readiness (ECLR) curriculum via the Naviance platform. ECLR lessons provide a blueprint to prepare middle and high school students for success after graduation and provide students with the necessary tools to persevere toward their long-term goals.

Students in grade 8 will have the opportunity to explore who they are and how their talents, aptitudes, and interests could lead to their ideal career. It provides lessons on using their strengths, goal setting for success, teamwork, stress management, time management, and more.

Students in high school (grades 9–12) will have the opportunity to continue to enhance their skills in goal setting, time management, stress management, and career planning. Students will explore their post-high school education options, networking, budgeting, financial options including scholarship searches, internships, and the college admissions process.

Naviance Platform

More than 10 million students rely on Naviance to achieve key readiness milestones and answer critical questions, such as:

  • Who Am I?
  • What Do I Want to Be?
  • How Will I Get There?
  • Will I Be Successful?

Enlightium counselors follow the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) model of counseling while guiding students in self-discovery, skill development, career exploration, and college and life planning activities using the Naviance platform.

Naviance accounts for grades 6–7 are provided upon request and grades 8–12 will be provided a Naviance account alongside course assignment.

Enlightium students in grades 9–12 are required to complete ten hours of community service annually to fulfill Enlightium's graduation requirements.

Both the Naviance and x2VOL platforms are provided as part of most tuition packages.

High School Counseling

Enlightium counselors provide proactive, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate support to students in grades 9–12. By partnering with parents, Enlightium enables students to become fully engaged in the educational process.

Enlightium high school counselors use the ASCA model of counseling to structure programs geared at equipping students to be active stakeholders in the pursuit of their academic, career, and life goals. They assist with course planning to help students meet credit requirements for graduation and prepare for their beyond high school plans.

The Enlightium high school counselors keep students informed about upcoming events that are related to career pursuits and college admissions. However, it is important for students and parents to take ownership in filling out college applications, scholarships, financial aid, and to communicate to their counselor if assistance is needed.

Teachers

About

Our Teachers

Enlightium Academy teachers help students develop biblical thinking in every discipline. By God’s grace, we work and pray that students would also learn to model Christian character in every area of life.

We seek to cultivate an abiding love for Christ in our students by encouraging the study of scripture, a vibrant prayer life, and engagement with their local church (John 15:4-5). Teachers hold high expectations for how students relate to their peers and submit to those in authority, showing respect for all.

Teacher support is calibrated to serve students who possess the skills for self-guided, independent learning and demonstrate initiative and resilience in academics. To that end, teachers guide students to make effective and responsible use of every available resource.

Our teachers genuinely care about the success of each student and reach out to them proactively as they progress through the curriculum. Teachers also leverage educational technology and skills to provide dynamic, Christ-honoring instruction differentiated to suit every student’s learning needs. Each teacher curates and maintains an exclusive digital library of supplementary materials, videos, and explanations to supplement curriculum and aid learning.

Enlightium teachers work with their students on an individual level, communicating directly within the curriculum. Gold and Diamond students also receive real-time phone support and one-on-one Zoom video sessions.

Dr. Maya Herzog

Dr. Maya Herzog

As a young child, Dr. Herzog enjoyed being outside more than anything else. She had a vivid imagination and there was always an adventure waiting for her to explore. she imagined traveling to distant places, learning about animals and life from around the world, and meeting the people who lived there. After high school, following family tradition, she decided to join the U.S. Navy. Her ten years of active duty gave her an authentic glimpse of scientific investigation. During that time, she also became a mentor and teacher, teaching underwater physics, oceanography, and sonar electronic systems. During her free time, she worked with the Chaplain to organize humanitarian events and outreach for the developing countries that they visited.

Following ten years of honorable service, she decided to take the skills that made her an outstanding sailor and apply them toward a full-time career in science and academia. She graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Ph.D. in Quantitative Biology. Dr, Herzog has taught undergraduate biology classes, including cellular and molecular biology, ecology, genetics, and microbiology.

My favorite bible passage is 1 Samuel 3:10, as God was patient with Samuel, as He is patient with us. All we have to do is listen to understand what He wants us to do. Dr. Herzog believes she has been called to teach science. Every moment spent with a student or a peer, at meetings, or even quick greetings of 'hello' or 'good-bye,' is a moment of fellowship.

In her free time, Dr. Herzog likes spending time with her family and, most of all, her little guy. They enjoy hiking, camping (when it is not so hot!), and traveling. Most important is they share moments of reading the Bible and reflecting on God's message on how to go about their lives every day. These moments continue to make us stronger.

“...Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Best Practices for Online Students

  • Use Cable Internet or better
  • Use Firefox or Chrome web browsers
  • Students should always click “Next Question” and “Previous Question” when proceeding through the assignments
  • Students should SAVE their work offline to avoid it being lost due to technical issues
  • Students should ALWAYS click “Log Out of Ignitia” to prevent Ignitia from locking them out temporarily
  • Students should NEVER click the “Back” button on assignments to navigate between pages
  • Students SHOULD NOT OPEN additional tabs when logged into Ignitia
  • Students should AVOID being inactive for more than 25 minutes on quizzes and tests to avoid being logged out
  • Clear cache and cookies to resolve most issues
  • If problems persist, call Ignitia Technical Support at (800) 735-4193 and request to screen share so they can replicate the issue
  • If Ignitia Technical Support is not able to resolve the issue, our team can provide ways to work around the issue by another means

Troubleshooting Techniques

  • I'm not able to log in

Clear your cache and cookies and history, then close and reopen the internet browser. Directions for clearing cookies can be found here.
  • I'm being logged out of quizzes and tests

    • Ensure that Ignitia is not open in any other tabs or windows
    • Ensure that you do not refresh the page or click the back button while taking a quiz or test
    • Ensure that you use Ignitia’s buttons instead of a keyboard for navigation
    • 20 minutes of “inactivity” will log a student out on lessons, quizzes and tests. General activity, such as clicking the “next question” button and then the “previous question” button, will allow the student to keep working
    • Ensure that no one but the student (such as a parent or a tutor) is logged in under the student’s account while he or she is working
    • Clear your cache and cookies and history, then close and reopen the internet browser BEFORE each quiz and test. Directions for clearing cookies can be found here
  • The answers to questions are showing up blank after I submit an assignment

Make sure the student clicks “next question” to navigate through the assignments to save the answers.
  • The answers are being changed after I submit an assignment

Make sure the student clicks “next question” to save the answer prior to submitting the assignment
  • An assignment says that not all of the questions are answered when I try to submit, even though they are

Go to question one and click “Next Question” until the end of the assignment and click submit again
  • Some answers are lost after I submit an assignment

    • Go to question one and click “Next Question” until the end of the assignment and click submit again
    • Ensure you follow the best practices if using Satellite Internet. If needed, answers to questions can be submitted via the help requests within questions, if the student hasn’t seen the answers yet
  • I can’t submit an assignment

    • 20 minutes of “inactivity” will log a student out on quizzes and tests. General activity, such as clicking the “Next Question” button and then the “Previous Question” button, will allow the student to keep working
    • Ensure you follow the best practices if using Satellite Internet. If needed, answers to questions can be submitted via the help requests within questions, if the student hasn’t seen the answers yet
  • An assignment has not been assigned

    • Contact your instructor or customer support to assign the next assignment
    • Students cannot move past a unit until all projects are completed
    • If an assignment or unit is marked as “Skipped”, the counselor or teacher determined that the material covered was not necessary for the student to complete
  • A question has an incorrect answer

Inform your instructor that the question’s answer is incorrect
  • A video within the lesson is not loading

Ensure that your computer is up-to-date in the following areas:

    • Operating system (OS)
    • Video-viewing software
    • Internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.)
    • Security software
  • I’m waiting too long for quizzes and tests to be unlocked

    • Contact your instructor or customer support to unlock the next quiz or test
    • Upgrade to the next available support level (Diamond, Gold, etc) to receive a more immediate teacher response
  • The audio does not work

Ensure that you are using Chrome or Firefox for your Internet browser
  • An assignment is showing multiple attempts even though I’m accessing it for the first time

    • Ensure that you do not start or look at an assignment, quiz, or test unless you intend to complete it. Ignitia will count opening an assignment as an attempt, even if no work is completed
    • Ensure that no one but the student (such as a parent or a tutor) is logged in under the student’s account while he/she is working
  • I think my account is being hacked

    • Change your password to a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols periodically
    • Ensure that you are logged out of Ignitia when you are not doing your schoolwork
    • When you log in to Ignitia, ensure that your username and password are not auto-filling (not saved)
    • Do not share your password with anyone
    • If the issue persists, contact Ignitia Customer Support at (877) 251-6662

Users of Satellite Internet

While we recommend against using satellite internet, we do have a recommendation for those who use satellite internet to provide the best service possible within the circumstances. In the past, students with satellite internet have used Google DNS to work with Ignitia, generally with positive results. Google DNS is a free, global DNS resolution service that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider; more information on Google DNS can be found here. Google DNS is not guaranteed to resolve all satellite internet issues, though it has worked for several students in the past.

To test how your Internet interacts with Ignitia (especially if you have no other options aside from satellite internet in your area) we encourage you to test our demo curriculum. The primary test should be to go through a quiz or test slowly (take at least 25 minutes clicking through the questions) to see if you are logged out. Preferably, two separate quizzes or tests should be attempted. If you get kicked out of one or both attempts, you will likely have issues. However, to make sure, clear your cache and cookies, close and reopen the browser, then attempt the quiz again. If you are not kicked out, try these two techniques, if possible:

  • Submit an essay question that is a few paragraphs in length (projects are good for this) to see if the entire answer goes through
  • Submit some “multiple select” questions with more than 10 options to see if the answers are submitted
Tips for avoiding issues
with satellite internet:
  • Reduce the internet usage in the home while quizzes and tests are taken—no other computers in the home should be using the internet connection during those times
  • Submit answers through help requests, if needed
  • Print lessons and/or answer the questions on paper, then submit the answers when connected to a reliable internet
  • You may request teachers to open up future assignments for this reason

Diagnostics Test

For a PC:

  1. In the start menu of Windows, open “Run” and type “CMD” to open Command Prompt.
  2. Type tracert ignitiumwa.ignitiaschools.com
    • If the results show numbers close to 50 ms, you are less likely to have issues and can enroll at your discretion.
    • If the results show numbers over 400 ms, you are somewhat likely to have issues and can enroll, keeping in mind our 14-day money back guarantee.
    • If the results show numbers over 700 ms, you are most likely to encounter many issues, which means our school will likely not be a good fit for your family.

For a Mac:

  1. Open Network Utility and select Traceroute.
  2. Type in ignitiumwa.ignitiaschools.com

Accreditation and Affiliations

About

Accreditation

Why does Enlightium Academy’s accreditation matter?

When looking for a partner in high-quality education for your child, accreditation matters. When a school holds accreditation status, it means an outside agency has thoroughly vetted its academic programs for rigorousness, quality, and adherence to educational standards. Additionally, it ensures that a school is stable, both fiscally and structurally.

Accreditation provides confirmation that the promises the school makes about the delivery system, courses, teachers, student support, and the tuition and fees are fair and trustworthy. To maintain the accreditation status an on-site audit is conducted by the accrediting body every five years to ensure that high standards remain and ongoing development is in place.

In addition to accepting transfer credits between schools, another benefit is that accreditation puts a stamp of approval on graduates. Graduating from an accredited school indicates that graduates are ready to study at a college level. This is important to colleges and universities when reviewing a new student acceptance.

Accreditations, Approvals, and Memberships

Enlightium Academy is proud to be associated with many academic organizations to provide a high-quality education for our students. Below is a list of our accrediting bodies, as well as our approvals, memberships, recognitions, and Alliance Partner schools.

Who Benefits from Accreditation?

In general, accreditation attests to the quality of an educational program as a whole. However, attending an accredited school most benefits students in preparing them to achieve post-high school goals and apply to competitive colleges or universities.
