Specialized Accommodations

Enlightium Academy is dedicated to making academic success possible for all students by providing a personalized learning environment.

As an approved and accredited private school, Enlightium Academy (Enlightium) provides several effective options for students with academic challenges and health impairments. We have experience working with students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other specific learning disabilities, as well as students who struggle with organizational skills and low motivation. At Enlightium, we strive to provide quality education to better the future of all students, no matter what obstacles they are facing.

Many students that typically need accommodations in a traditional school find that Enlightium’s learning model is just what they need to be successful. Below are some ways in which the virtual learning platform, Ignitia, accommodates all students:

  • Extra attempts on assignments
  • Daily schedule
  • Extra time on lessons and assessments
  • Ability to print assignments
  • Text-to-speech functionality
  • Translation tool
  • Preferential seating
  • Ability to take frequent breaks

Additionally, further accommodations can be made within the tuition package that you choose for your student. Examples include:

  • Assistance in setting flexible and attainable short-term goals
  • Meeting weekly, or bi-weekly with a teacher to work on needed skills or to provide accountability
  • Allowing writing assignments to be submitted orally with an outline
  • Using Pass/Fail grading for selected courses
  • Instructions presented orally
  • Audio versions of assignments

Enlightium students with academic, cognitive, intellectual, learning, and health challenges interested in taking college-bound exams (i.e. PSAT, SAT, ACT) are required by ACT and CollegeBoard to have an active plan with their school prior to requesting accommodations for an exam. Accommodation requests take 6–8 weeks to be approved. Therefore, it is imperative to begin the process early. Enlightium students that would like to pursue a formal, written plan may set up a consultation with our Intervention Specialist.

Disclaimer: Please note that Enlightium Academy does not provide the same type of support that public schools provide due to the laws that govern educational funding for students with academic challenges. Not all accommodations are guaranteed since they are tailored to each student specifically.

Available Add-on Plans

Resident District Individualized Service Plan (RD-ISP)

Available for Grades 3-12

This is similar to an Individualized Education Program (IEP). However, it is designed to be used by a private school. Enlightium is able to accept a Resident District ISP directly from a Resident District.

Please note that funds have been allocated by the federal government for the public education system to provide families that choose private education for their students an evaluation to qualify for a RD-ISP. This is done through the family’s Resident District. They will evaluate and assess your student for a RD-ISP. If your student qualifies, they will write, manage, and own the RD-ISP. Enlightium’s Interventions Specialist will collaborate with them directly to facilitate adaptations and/or accommodations for each student as the Resident District deems necessary and in accordance with our ability to meet those needs.

The process typically takes some time and course assignment may be delayed as your Resident District finalizes documentation.

In the meantime, students in grades 3–8 may continue to work on Bible courses and all students will have access to Enlightium’s Student Orientation course.

Tier Three Academic Interventions

Available for Grades 3-12

The three-tiered intervention program was developed from Enlightium’s acknowledgment of the restrictive laws that govern educational funding for students with academic challenges and our desire to support the needs of our students by providing academic interventions and accommodations without or in lieu of a Resident District ISP.

Enlightium accepts diagnostic documentation and Special Education records from parents. As a private school, we cannot service IEPs but our Intervention Team will collaborate with parents, teachers, and students to equip your student for optimal learning. Our Intervention Specialist can develop a formal plan if specialized modifications are needed.

Note: A formal written plan is not required to obtain specialized accommodations at Enlightium, we gladly support each student according to their need. A consultation should be arranged only if official documentation is needed, such as for college entry exams, government agencies, etc. or if substantial modifications to Enlightium’s curriculum are necessary.

Section 504 Plan for Health Impairments

Available for Grades 3-12

According to www.dol.gov, a student’s physical, mental, or emotional health impairment is defined as:

...any physiological disorder or condition, cosmetic disfigurement, or anatomical loss affecting one or more of the following body systems: neurological; musculoskeletal; special sense organs; respiratory, including speech organs; cardiovascular; reproductive, digestive, genitourinary; hemic and lymphatic; skin; and endocrine; or any mental or psychological disorder such as, emotional or mental illness, and a major life activity, defined as functions such as caring for one’s self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, standing, lifting, bending, reading, concentrating, thinking, and communicating are impacted your child.

A student does not need to be substantially limited in the major life activity of learning to be eligible under Section 504. A student may have a disability that in no way affects his/her ability to learn, yet the student may need extra assistance of some kind to complete Enlightium’s curriculum with success. Enlightium’s Intervention Specialist considers available diagnostic documentation and doctors’ recommendations concerning the student’s degree of impairment and collaborates with parents to create a 504 plan.

Note: A 504 plan is not required in order to obtain accommodations at Enlightium, we gladly support each student according to their need. A consultation should be scheduled only if official documentation is needed, such as for college entry exams, government agencies, etc.

Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP)

Available for Grades 3–12

Parents at Enlightium will need to collaborate with their student’s counselor to receive an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) detailing course assignments and progress. Students typically do not need an IHIP unless their state or district explicitly requires one. If an IHIP is required, parents simply need to reach out to their student’s counselor to start the process of receiving one.

Depending on the time of the year, it may take up to 5 business days for the student’s counselor to provide an IHIP, so families should notify their counselor via email as soon as possible if they require an IHIP or an updated IHIP.
